Novel hydrogel properties by microstructural control of carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibers using freezing

Sekine, Yurina

Fain Kemikaru, 52(8), p.25 - 32, 2023/08

By using the freezing phenomenon, we discovered that a hydrogel with high compressive strength can be formed using only harmless materials, mainly carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibers. The key is the phase separation of ice crystals and solutes that occurs when aqueous solutions freeze. This paper describes the formation mechanism of the freeze crosslinked hydrogel and its properties.

Effect of heavy ion irradiation on optical property of radiation-crosslinked hydroxypropyl cellulose gel containing methacrylate monomers

Hiroki, Akihiro; Yamashita, Shinichi*; Kimura, Atsushi; Nagasawa, Naotsugu; Taguchi, Mitsumasa

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research B, 365(Part B), p.583 - 586, 2015/12

Effects of liner energy transfer (LET) and dose rate on the optical property of polymer gel dosimeters were investigated. The dosimeter prepared by using a radiation-crosslinked hydroxypropyl cellulose gel and methacrylate monomers such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and nonaethylene glycol dimethacrylate showed the color change from colorless to white with the He, C, Fe ions irradiation. Absorbance of the irradiated dosimeters increased with the dose up to 10 Gy. The absorbance of the dosimeters at the same total dose decreased with increasing dose rate in the range of 0.1 to 6.8 Gy/min. The absorbance decreased in order of He, C, Fe ions, which was in agreement with a change of LET. The increase in LET affected the decrease in the number of polymerization initiator such as OH radical and hydrated electron, resulting in the reduction of the absorbance of the dosimeters.

Nihon Shiruku Gakkai-Shi, 23, p.67 - 69, 2015/03

Silk aerogel has been prepared from liquid silk, and the influences of the $$gamma$$ ray-irradiation on its mechanical property have been investigated. The formation of crosslinking structure in the sericin component by the $$gamma$$ ray-irradiation should induced the hardening of the silk aerogel.

Protein nanowires exhibiting specific biological activities hold promise for interacting with living cells and controlling and predicting biological responses such as apoptosis, endocytosis and cell adhesion. Here we report the result of the interaction of a single high-energy charged particle with protein molecules. Degradation of the human serum albumin nanowires was examined using trypsin. The biotinylated human serum albumin nanowires bound avidin, demonstrating the high affinity of the nanowires. Human serum albumin-avidin hybrid nanowires were also fabricated from a solid state mixture and exhibited good mechanical strength. The biotinylated human serum albumin nanowires can be transformed into nanowires exhibiting a biological function such as avidin-biotinyl interactions and peroxidase activity. The present technique is a versatile platform for functionalizing the surface of any protein molecule with an extremely large surface area.

Removal of toxic metals from streaming water and ground water is important task to preserve environment. Radiation processings of grafting and crosslinking can synthesis adsorbent having high performances. Graft adsorbent can be synthesized by using the conventional polymer like polyethylene having variety shapes such as membrane, cloth, and fiber. Especially, the obtained fibrous adsorbent has 100 times higher rate of adsorption than that of commercialized resin. Novel fibrous adsorption for arsenic was synthesized by direct grafting of phosphoric monomer and following zirconium-loading. Fibrous adsorbents of amidoxime and iminodiacetate were applied to the removal of cadmium from the scallop waste. Furthermore, the amidoxime adsorbent is useful to recover rare metal such as uranium and vanadium in seawater. Crosslinked natural polymers like chitin-chitosan in the paste-like state are applicable for the metal adsorbent. This adsorbent can be biodegraded after usage.

The absorption ability of various metal ions into EB - radiation crosslinked carboxymethylchitin and carboxymethylchitosan has been investigated. The highest adsorption of Scandium and Gold has been obtained for carboxymethylchitin (CMCht) and carboxymethylchitosan (CMChts), respectively. Kinetic studies showed that adsorption of most of the metal ions occur in a relatively short period of time (2 hours). Detail investigation of adsorption of gold ions has been carried out for both hydrogels. The maximum uptake of Au cations, based on Langmuir equation was determined to be 37.59 mg/g for CMChts and 11.86 mg/g for CMCht. Both hydrogels indicate favorable adsorption of gold cations.

A systematic study of the atom-level mixtures between Co and C$$_{60}$$ has made possible to find a new C$$_{60}$$-based compound phase, Co$$_{x}$$C$$_{60}$$ (x$$leq$$5). It is confirmed with the EXAFS analysis and the positron annihilation study that the polymeric structure is developed three-dimensionally by bridging two C$$_{60}$$ molecules with the covalently bonded Co atom.
